Get a Kit.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having important supplies in sufficient quantity for each member of your family to last for at least three days. Emergency managers in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties want to make sure you know what to have in place now in case of a disaster.

Recommended Items:

Food, Water, Bedding and Clothing

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation.
  • Non-perishable food, at least a three-day supply. Examples include canned juices, crackers, peanut butter, cereal, nuts and vitamins.
  • Manual can opener.
  • Sleeping items for each person.
  • Extra clothing that is appropriate for the conditions you may be exposed to.
  • Enclosed shoes.

Portable Communication Devices

  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio.
  • Flashlight.
  • Extra batteries.
  • Whistle to signal for help.
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
Medical and Health

  • First aid kit.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Sunblock.
  • Anti-bacterial sanitizer.
  • Insect repellant.
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.
Infants and Children

  • Infant formula, wipes and diapers.
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children.
Pets

  • Pet food and extra water for your pet.
General Supplies

  • Manual tools, such as a wrench, pliers, hammer, etc.
  • Local maps.
  • Bleach.
  • Important documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records, in a waterproof, portable container.
  • Cash or traveler's checks and change.
  • Matches in a waterproof container.
